Wayne County health officials are urging unvaccinated and immunocompromised residents to take precautions during fair week as the county continues to respond to a measles outbreak. According to a community announcement from the Wayne County Health Department, people who are vaccinated against measles or have immunity to the virus face little to no concern from exposure, while those who are unvaccinated or immunocompromised should be cautious, particularly when attending indoor fair events. So far, Wayne County has recorded nine confirmed measles cases, along with 38 probable or suspected cases. According to Wayne County Health Commissioner Nicholas Cascarelli over 700 individuals have been vaccinated within the past month. Health officials say measles spreads easily and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.
